History

In the late 1970s, when Seagram owned the GH Mumm champagne house, they purchased Gold Seal Winery of New York. They began a quest for the best area in the U.S. to establish a vineyard for the production of traditional champagne grapes. The mission, headed by French Winemaker Guy Devaux, was top secret and was called Project Lafayette.
Devaux produced the first vintage in 1983 under the label Domaine Mumm. The Mumm Napa facility was built and opened in 1987, complete with below ground level production facilities to simulate the cool cave like conditions in the GH Mumm Champagne house. The first vintage of Domaine Mumm's prestige cuvee, DVX was 1989. The name was changed from Domaine Mumm to Mumm Napa in 1990. In 1993, the winery opened the Fine Art Photography Gallery with exquisite works of artists such as Ansel Adams on exhibit in the main gallery.
Seagram eventually sold Champagne houses GH Mumm and Perrier-Jouët to a Texas investment company who eventually sold both houses to Allied Domecq in 2001. Mumm Napa was sold to a different firm, Diageo, who in turn sold Mumm Napa to the Allied Domecq group in 2002, reuniting Mumm Napa and G.H. Mumm. In the mid 2000s, Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq, which included G.H. Mumm, Perrier-Jouët and Mumm Napa. The picturesque 'Oak Terrace' was opened in 2008, overlooking lush vineyards and centered around a 180 year old oak tree.
Ludovic Dervin, originally from Champagne, took over as head winemaker in 2002 Ludovic has worked with the San Francisco Giants and the legendary musician, Carlos Santana to create specific labels for each. Tamra Lotz became Mumm Napa's first female winemaker in 2020.
