History
Gilbert Gruet, the founder of Gruet Winery, was born in Bethon, France in 1931. He planted his first vineyard in Bethon on land given to him by his father. In 1967 he established the Champagne house Gruet et Fils. In the same year he created the wine co-op U.V.C.B. (Union Vinicole des Coteaux).
In 1981, Gilbert Gruet, along with his wife Danielle, started exploring United States winemaking regions with the idea of expansion. While the family was traveling through the southwestern part of the US Gilbert explored the idea of starting a vineyard in New Mexico. He came across a group of European winemakers who had successfully planted vineyards in Engle, located about 170 miles south of Albuquerque. Vineyards had been planted there as early as the 1600s. The climate and soil conditions appeared suitable for a vineyard. So, he planted an experimental vineyard in Engle, New Mexico. The plantings were exclusively Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. In 1984, two of his four children, Laurent and Nathalie, joined their parents in New Mexico to participate in their American winemaking adventure.
The first Gruet wine releases in the United State debuted in 1989 with their 1987 Brut and Blanc de Noirs, New Mexico. Gruet Winery opened it's Albuquerque facility in 1993. Gilbert passed away six years later in 1999.
Gruet Winery became internationally recognized in 2004 when their 1997 Blac de Blancs won the Yarden Trophy at the International Wine & Spirits competition in London. Gruet's non-vintage Blanc de Noirs was #43 on Wine Spectator's 2011's Top 100 Wines of the World. Gruet increased it's production in 2014 when the Tamaya Vineyard was planted in partnership with the Pueblo of Santa Ana.
Seattle based, Precept Wine purchased the Gruet Winery in 2015. The following year, a Gruet tasting room was opened in Santa Fe at the Hotel St. Francis.
