History
Domaine Carneros' history begins with Taittinger, the well known French Champagne House. Claude Taittinger began his search for a suitable site to make sparkling wine in the United States according to the Taittinger Champagne House tradition in the 1970s. Land purchases were made in partnership with their distributor, Kobrand, in the 1980s. Plans were soon in place to create the spectacular venue we know today.
Eileen Crane was hired as winemaker in 1987 to establish their California winery. Eileen was the sparkling winemaker and held the title of CEO until 2020. Domaine Carneros was modeled after Chateau de la Marquetterie in Champagne, France, but on a more grandiose scale. Chateau de la Marquetterie was included when Pierre Taittinger established the Taittinger Champagne House in the 1930's. Domaine Carneros is currently owned by Taittinger and Kobrand.
